Why Magnesium Belongs in Your Electrolyte Drink

Magnesium participates in over 300 enzymatic processes in the body, from normal energy metabolism to muscle relaxation to nerve signaling. Surveys consistently show that nearly half of adults consume less magnesium than recommended.
Despite all this, most electrolyte drinks contain little or no magnesium. The formulas built around sodium and sugar simply do not prioritize it.
What magnesium does in hydration
Magnesium is an electrolyte in its own right: it carries an electric charge when dissolved and plays a direct role in cellular fluid balance. It also works alongside calcium for normal muscle function: calcium supports contraction, magnesium supports relaxation.
A hydration product without magnesium is addressing only part of the mineral picture.
How much magnesium to look for
The RDA for magnesium is 310–420 mg per day depending on age and sex. A meaningful contribution from a hydration mix would be 100–150 mg per serving. Anything under 30 mg is largely symbolic.
N-2 delivers 130 mg per stick (30% DV) from seawater-sourced magnesium in hydroxide and citrate forms. That is a meaningful daily contribution from a single glass of water.
Source matters
Magnesium oxide, the cheapest and most common supplemental form, has relatively low bioavailability. Marine-sourced magnesium from seawater delivers magnesium in more bioavailable forms alongside naturally occurring trace minerals that isolated salts do not carry.
