Why Calcium Belongs in Hydration: Not Just in Supplements

June 22, 2026 · 5 min read

When people think of calcium, they think of bones and dairy. But calcium is also an electrolyte, involved in normal muscle contraction, nerve signaling, and enzyme function. It is one of the most commonly underconsumed minerals in modern diets, especially among women over 30.

Calcium as an electrolyte

Electrolytes are simply minerals that carry an electric charge in solution. Calcium is one of them. It works alongside sodium, potassium, and magnesium to support normal fluid balance and cell signaling.

Yet the electrolyte aisle treats calcium like it belongs somewhere else: in a supplement pill, not in your water bottle. That is a missed opportunity for daily mineral restoration.

The intake gap

National dietary surveys consistently show that most adults fall short of the recommended 1,000–1,200 mg of daily calcium intake. At the same time, filtered and softened water has removed one of calcium’s historical delivery channels. Adding calcium back to daily water is one of the simplest ways to close the gap.

Marine-sourced calcium

N-2 sources calcium from Lithothamnion, a red marine algae harvested off northwest Iceland. Unlike limestone-derived calcium carbonate, this marine source carries 70+ naturally occurring trace minerals as part of its biological structure. Each stick delivers 130 mg (10% DV).
